Ep. 17 | I Said This, He Heard That: The Book That Healed Our Marriage

How a color-coded book and the Holy Spirit helped me stop trying to disciple my husband into being more like me.

Let me tell you about the book that brought me to actual, honest-to-goodness repentance in my marriage. It's called I Said This, You Heard That—and it did more than teach us how to communicate. It showed me how much I was trying to shape my husband into my image… instead of trusting who God created him to be.

We’ve been married 11 years. I’m a Red-Yellow (hi, Sanguine-Choleric) which means I have a lot to say, fast. My husband? Phlegmatic-Melancholic. Think steady, peaceful, and quiet. You can imagine how those differences played out in the early years.

This book was the bridge we didn’t know we needed between how we were wired and how we were wounding each other unintentionally.

In this episode, I’m sharing:

  • The hilarious and humbling differences between our temperaments

  • How I used to think loving him meant “fixing” him

  • Why I Said This, You Heard That pointed me to Jesus more than to communication hacks

  • How we’ve learned to embrace the differences instead of erasing them

  • Why this resource is still in our back pocket when we hit a bump

If you’ve ever felt like your spouse was the exact opposite of you (and not in a cute, rom-com way), this episode is for you. Marriage is hard, but the Spirit softens. And sometimes that softening starts with a $20 workbook and a little humility.
